A Symbol of Peace, Unity, and the Oneness of Humanity

The Wheel of Compassion

The Wheel of Compassion is a contemporary participatory public art initiative inspired by the traditional Tibetan prayer wheel. It reimagines an ancient spiritual form as a living, inclusive symbol for our time, inviting communities to unite around one of humanity’s most universal values: compassion.

In a world often defined by division, the Wheel offers a simple yet powerful gesture.

With every turn, it affirms a shared truth: we belong to one human family.

Rooted in the spirit of the Tibetan prayer wheel,  which traditionally carries sacred prayers and blessings for the benefit of all beings, the Wheel of Compassion extends this intention into contemporary public life. It is created as a living symbol for the betterment of humanity, designed to serve communities through reflection, participation, and unity.

Each installation is placed in accessible public spaces such as parks, walking trails, cultural centers, educational institutions, and interfaith gathering spaces.

The project is developed in collaboration with local faith leaders, artists, and community members so that each chapter reflects its community at its highest values while remaining aligned with the initiative’s core purpose: to awaken compassion and strengthen human connection.

The Wheel carries selected prayers and sacred texts centered on compassion from diverse faith traditions. The intention is not to blend or dilute religions, but to respectfully illuminate a value shared across traditions.

By encountering compassionate teachings from other faiths, individuals are invited into recognition rather than comparison,  a recognition that the same essence of compassion lives within their own belief system. Through that recognition, mutual understanding and respect can deepen.

Inspiration

On July 6, 2025, His Holiness the Dalai Lama celebrated his 90th birthday. From that day until July 6, 2026, the Tibetan community considers this period the Year of Compassion.

Core Elements of the Project

To maintain unity and coherence across the global project, each chapter includes several foundational elements that preserve the identity and vision of the Wheel of Compassion

• The title “Wheel of Compassion” displayed at the top of the installation.

• The phrase “Oneness Over Otherness” and/or “Oneness of Humanity” displayed at the base, reflecting the guiding

philosophy of the project.

• Universal visual symbols representing shared humanity, including the globe (planet Earth), the heart (love and compassion), and the symbol of peace.

• Words for compassion from different faith traditions and cultures displayed on the wheel in multiple languages and scripts, symbolizing the shared moral values of humanity.

• An open or symbolic interior space within the wheel, representing the possibility for people to contribute written prayers, reflections, or compassionate wishes ,  allowing the installation to evolve as a collective offering from the community.

• A dedicated informational stand placed beside the installation, explaining the vision of the Wheel of Compassion, describing how compassion is understood within different traditions, and providing context for the prayers and symbols represented on the wheel.

The Story Behind the Wheel

The Wheel of Compassion

is a personal initiative created by Tenzin Topten as his contribution to the Year of Compassion Project,

A global effort to honor the legacy of His Holiness through meaningful action.

Inspired by the enduring message of compassion and unity, the project responds to a painful reality: across the world, countless lives continue to be lost in the name of religion and division.

History has shown the suffering caused by such conflicts, and tragically, these divisions still persist today.

The Wheel of Compassion seeks to offer a different path, a universal symbol that invites people of all backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures to reflect on our shared values of compassion, peace, and the oneness of humanity.

Based in Calgary, Tenzin Topten is a skilled barber at True Gents Barbershop YYC, known not only for his craftsmanship but also for his warm spirit and genuine connection with people from all walks of life.

Guided by his Tibetan heritage and a lifelong belief that compassion is the foundation of humanity, he created the Wheel of Compassion as a way to bring people together through art, dialogue, and shared reflection.

Through this project, Tenzin hopes to inspire individuals and communities to practice compassion not only as an idea, but as a daily action one connection, one community, and one act of understanding at a time. In doing so, the project directly supports His Holiness’s lifelong commitments to promoting universal human values and fostering inter religious harmony.
